chapter.YourvehiclemaynotpasstheI/Mtestwith
the“CheckEngine/ServiceEngineSoon”lighton.
Ifthevehicle’spowertrainsystemoritsbatteryhas
justbeenserviced,theOBD-IIsystemisresettoa
“notreadyforI/Mtest”condition.Toreadythe
OBD-IIsystemforI/Mtesting,aminimumof30
minutesofcityandhighwaydrivingisnecessaryas
describedbelow:

First,atleast10minutesofdrivingonan
expresswayorhighway.
Next,atleast20minutesdrivinginstop-and-go,
city-typetrafficwithatleastfouridleperiods.
Allowthevehicletositforatleasteighthours
withoutstartingtheengine.Then,starttheengine
andcompletetheabovedrivingcycle.Theengine
mustwarmuptoitsnormaloperatingtemperature.
Oncestarted,donotturnofftheengineuntilthe
abovedrivingcycleiscomplete.
