bagsaredesignedtoinflateinfrontaland
near-frontalcollisions,notrollover,side-impact,or
rear-impacts.

deflaterapidlyupon
activation.Afterairbag
deployment,itis
normaltonoticea
smoke-like,powdery
residueorsmellthe
burntpropellant.This
mayconsistof
cornstarch,talcum
powder(tolubricate
thebag)orsodium
compounds(e.g.,bakingsoda)thatresultfromthe
combustionprocessthatinflatestheairbag.Small
amountsofsodiumhydroxidemaybepresentwhich
mayirritatetheskinandeyes,butnoneofthe
residueistoxic.
Whilethesystemisdesignedtohelpreduceserious
injuries,itmayalsocauseminorburns,abrasions,
swellingortemporaryhearingloss.Becauseairbags
mustinflaterapidlyandwithconsiderableforce,
