Occasionalbrakenoiseisnormalandoftendoesnot
indicateaperformanceconcernwiththevehicle’s
brakesystem.Innormaloperation,automotivebrake
systemsmayemitoccasionalorintermittentsqueal
orgroannoiseswhenthebrakesareapplied.Such
noisesareusuallyheardduringthefirstfewbrake
applicationsinthemorning;however,theymaybe
heardatanytimewhilebrakingandcanbe
aggravatedbyenvironmentalconditionssuchas
cold,heat,moisture,roaddust,saltormud.Ifa
“metal-to-metal,”“continuousgrinding”or
“continuoussqueal”soundispresentwhilebraking,
thebrakeliningsmaybeworn-outandshouldbe
inspectedbyaqualifiedservicetechnician.
Anti-lock brake system (ABS) (if equipped)
Onvehiclesequippedwithananti-lockbraking
system(ABS),anoisefromthehydraulicpump
motorandpulsationinthepedalmaybeobserved
duringABSbrakingevents.Pedalpulsationcoupled
withnoisewhilebrakingunderpanicconditionsor
onloosegravel,bumps,wetorsnowyroadsis
normalandindicatesproperfunctioningofthe
vehicle’santi-lockbrakesystem.Ifthevehiclehas
continuousvibrationorshudderinthesteering
wheelwhilebraking,thevehicleshouldbeinspected
byaqualifiedservicetechnician.
TheABSoperatesby
detectingtheonsetof
wheellockupduring
brakeapplications
andcompensatingfor
thistendency.The
wheelsareprevented
fromlockingeven
whenthebrakesarefirmlyapplied.The
