How does the side air bag system work?
Thesideairbagsystemconsistsof
thefollowing:

Aninflatablenylonbag(airbag)
withagasgeneratorconcealed
behindtheoutboardbolsterof
thedriverandfrontpassenger
seatbacks.

Aspecialseatcoverdesignedto
allowairbagdeployment.
Thesamewarninglight,
electroniccontrolanddiagnosticunitasusedforthefrontairbags.
Thetwosidesensorsarelocatedonthelowerportionoftheb-pillar.
NOTE:Asideairbag,incombinationwithseatbelts,canhelpreduce
theriskofsevereinjuriesintheeventofasignificantsideimpact
collision.
Thesideairbagsarefittedontheoutboardsideoftheseatbacksofthe
frontseats.Incertainlateralcollisions,theairbagonthesideaffected
bythecollisionwillbeinflated,eveniftherespectiveseatisnot
occupied.Theairbagwasdesignedtoinflatebetweenthedoorpanel
andoccupanttofurtherenhancetheprotectionprovidedoccupantsin
sideimpactcollisions.
TheairbagSRSisdesignedtoactivatewhenthevehiclesustainslateral
decelerationsufficienttocausethesensorstocloseanelectricalcircuit
thatinitiatesairbaginflation.
Thefactthattheairbagsdidnotinflateinacollisiondoesnotmeanthat
somethingiswrongwiththesystem.Rather,itmeanstheforceswere
notofthetypesufficienttocauseactivation.Sideairbagsaredesigned
toinflateinside-impactcollisions,notroll-over,rear-impact,frontal,
near-frontaloroppositesidecollisions,unlessthecollisioncauses
sufficientlateraldeceleration.
