Attaching safety seats with LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for

Children) attachments for child seat anchors

Somechildsafetyseatshavetworigidorwebbingmountedattachments

thatconnecttotwoanchorsatcertainseatingpositionsinyourvehicle.

Whenproperlyinstalled,thistypeofseateliminatestheneedtouseseat

beltstoattachthechildseat.Forforward-facingchildseats,thetether

strapmustalsobeattachedtothepropertetheranchor.SeeAttaching

safetyseatswithtetherstrapsinthischapter.

YourvehiclehasLATCHanchorsforchildseatinstallationasshownin

theillustration.Therearenoneinthefrontpassengerseat.

Theanchorsclosesttothecenter

rearseatareprovidedprimarilyfor

childseatsattheoutboardseating

positions.Theseanchorsarefarther

apartthanthepairsoflower

anchorsforchildseatinstallationat

theoutboardseats.

Whiletheanchorsclosesttothe

centerseatmayalsobeusable,specialprecautionsmustbefollowed.

First,ifthoseanchorsarealreadyinusebyaLATCHequippedchildseat

oneitheroutboardseat,youmustnotattachtwoLATCHseatsto

thesameanchorpoint—itwilloverloadtheanchorpoint.Either

spreadthetwoLATCHequippedseatstotheoutboardpositionsoruse

theregularlapbeltonthecenterone(Iftheseathasatether,besureto

alsoattachittothecentertetheranchor).

Secondly,thoseLATCHequippedchildseatswithrigidLATCH

attachmentswillnotlatchinthecenterrearpositionbecausethosetwo

middleanchorsaretoofarapart.YoucanonlyattachtherigidLATCH

equippedchildseatstotheoutboardseatLATCHanchorsthathavethe

properspacingforthattypeofchildseat.Ifyourchildseathasflexible

LATCHattachments,besurethatthemanufacturer’sinstructionssay

thatitcanreachtoanchorsspacedatleast500mm(19in)apart.

WARNING: NeverattachtwoLATCHchildsafetyseatstothe

sameanchor.Inacrash,oneanchormaynotbestrongenough

toholdtwochildsafetyseatattachmentsandmaybreak,

causingseriousinjuryordeath.
