Your vehicle may have been designed to meet California
low emission stand ard s when using cleaner burning
California reform ulated gasoline with low sulfur. This
vehicle may be sold nationw ide. Your vehicle will oper-
ate satisfactorily on fuels meeting Federal specification,
but emission control system perform ance may be ad- 5
versely affected .
MMT is a manganese containing metallic additive that is
blend ed into som e gasoline to increase the octane nu m-
ber. Gasolines blend ed with MMT offer no perform ance
advantage beyond gasolines of the sam e octane nu mber
withou t MMT. Gasolines blend ed with MMT have show n
to red uce spark plug life and red uce emission system
perform ance in som e vehicles. The manu factu rer recom -
mend s using gasolines withou t MMT. Since the MMT
content of gasoline may not be ind icated on the pump,
you shou ld ask you r gasoline retailer whether or not
his/ her gasoline contains MMT.
Gasoline sold outsid e of California is perm itted to have
higher sulfur levels which may affect the perform ance of
the vehicle’s catalytic converter. This may cause the
Malfu nction Ind icator Light to illuminate. The manu fac-
turer recom mend s that you try a different brand of
unlead ed gasoline having lower sulfur to determ ine if the
problem is fuel related prior to retu rning you r vehicle to
an authorized dealer for service.
It is even more important to look for gasolines withou t
MMT in Canad a, becau se MMT can be used at levels
higher than those allow ed in the United States.
