Remove the dipstick and determ ine if the fluid is hot
CAUTIO N!
or warm . Hot fluid is approxim ately 180°F (82°C), which
is the norm al operating tem peratu re after the vehicle has
been driven at least 15 miles (24 km). The fluid cannot be
comfortably held betw een the finger tips. Cold is when
the fluid is below 80°F (27°C).
Do not overfill. Dirt and water in the tran smission
can cause seriou s damage. To preven t dirt and water
from enterin g the tran smission after checking or
rep len ish ing flu id, make certain that the dipstick cap
is reseated prop erly.

Wipe the dipstick clean and reinsert until seated .
Remove dipstick and note read ing.
Fluid and Filter Changes
Autom atic transm ission fluid shou ld be changed on all
transm issions as follow s:
a. If the fluid is hot, the read ing shou ld be in the
crosshatched area marked “HOT” (betw een the upper
two holes in the dipstick).
Norm al Usage — No change necessary
Severe Usage (fluid and filter) — 60,000 miles (96 000 km)
Severe Usage is defined as:

b. If the fluid is cold, the fluid level shou ld be betw een
the lower two holes in the area marked “COLD”.
If the fluid level ind icates low, add sufficient fluid to
bring to the prop er level.
