Automatictransmissionfluidexpandswhenwarmed.Toobtainan
accuratefluidcheck,drivethevehicleuntilitiswarmedup
(approximately20miles[30km]).Ifyourvehiclehasbeen
operatedforanextendedperiodathighspeeds,incitytraffic
duringhotweatherorpullingatrailer,thevehicleshouldbe
turnedoffforabout30minutestoallowfluidtocoolbefore
checking.

Drivethevehicle20miles(30km)oruntilitreachesnormaloperating
temperature.

starttheengineandmovethegearshiftleverthroughallofthegear
ranges.Allowsufficienttimeforeachgeartoengage.
Parkthevehicleonalevelsurfaceandengagetheparkingbrake.
Withtheparkingbrakeengagedandyourfootonthebrakepedal,

LatchthegearshiftleverinP(Park)andleavetheenginerunning.
Removethedipstick,wipingitcleanwithaclean,drylintfreerag.If
necessary,refertoIdentifyingcomponentsintheenginecompartment
inthischapterforthelocationofthedipstick.

Installthedipstickmakingsureitisfullyseatedinthefillertube.

Removethedipstickandinspectthefluidlevel.Thefluidshouldbein
thedesignatedareasfornormaloperatingtemperature.
Lowfluidlevel
Donotdrivethevehicleifthefluid
levelisintheaddrangeordoesnot
showatallonthedipstick.
Correctfluidlevel
Thetransmissionfluidshouldbecheckedatnormaloperating
temperature149°F(65°C)onalevelsurface.Thenormaloperating
temperaturecanbereachedafterapproximately20miles(30km)of
driving.
Thetransmissionfluidshouldbe
withinthecross-hatchareaifat
normaloperatingtemperature149°F
(65°C).
