extrabrakingfromtheengineby
shiftingtoalowergear.Thisextra
brakingcanhelpyoumaintainasafe
speedandpreventyourbrakesfrom
overheatingwhilegoingdowna
steephill.Beforedownshifting,
makesuretheenginespeedwillnot
gointothetachometer’sredzonein
thelowergear.
youinadvertentlydownshiftintothe
wronggear(forexample,goingfrom
thirdgearathighrpmstosecondgear
insteadofupshiftingtofourthgear;the
enginespeedlimiterwillnotworkinthis
situation).
Cometoafullstopbeforeyoushift
intoreverse.Youcandamagethe
transmissionbytryingtoshiftinto
reversewiththevehiclemoving.
Pushdowntheclutchpedal,and
pauseforafewsecondsbefore
shiftingintoreverse,orshiftintoone
oftheforwardgearsforamoment.
Thisstopsthegearssotheywon’t
‘‘grind.’’
Themanualtransmissionis
Rapidslowingorspeeding-up
cancauselossofcontrolon
slipperysurfaces.Ifyoucrash,
youcanbeinjured.
synchronizedinallforwardgearsfor
smoothoperation.Ithasalockoutso
youcannotaccidentallyshiftfrom
fifthtoreverseinsteadofsixth(see
page251).Whenshiftingupor
down,makesureyoupushtheclutch
pedaldownalltheway,shifttothe
nextgear,andletthepedalup
gradually.Whenyouarenotshifting,
donotrestyourfootontheclutch
pedal.Thiscancauseyourclutchto
wearoutfaster.
