position:
Youhearnothing,oralmost
nothing.Theengine’sstarter
motordoesnotoperateatall,or
operatesveryslowly.
NothingHappensortheStarter
Turntheignitionswitchtothe
START(III)position.Ifthe
MotorOperatesVerySlowly
Whenyouturntheignitionswitchto
theSTART(III)position,youdonot
hearthenormalnoiseoftheengine
tryingtostart.Youmayheara
clickingsound,aseriesofclicks,or
nothingatall.
headlightsdonotdim,checkthe
conditionofthefuses.Ifthefuses
areOK,thereisprobably
somethingwrongwiththe
electricalcircuitfortheignition
switchorstartermotor.Youwill
needaqualifiedtechnicianto
determinetheproblem.See
EmergencyTowingonpage331.
Checkthesethings:
Youcanhearthestartermotor
operatingnormally,orthestarter
motorsoundslikeitisspinning
fasterthannormal,buttheengine
doesnotstartupandrun.
Checkthetransmissioninterlock.
Ifyouhaveamanualtransmission,
theclutchpedalmustbepushed
allthewaytothefloororthe
starterwillnotoperate.Withan
automatictransmission,theshift
levermustbeinParkorneutral.
Iftheheadlightsdimnoticeablyor
gooutwhenyoutrytostartthe
engine,eitherthebatteryis
dischargedortheconnectionsare
corroded.Checktheconditionof
thebatteryandterminalconnec-
tions(seepage308).Youcan
thentryjumpstartingthevehicle
fromaboosterbattery(seepage
320).
TurntheignitionswitchtotheON
(
II)position.Turnonthe
headlights,andchecktheir
brightness.Iftheheadlightsare
verydimordonotcomeonatall,
thebatteryisdischarged.See
