Makesureanyunusedseatbelt
thatachildcanreachisbuckled,
Lockalldoorsandthetrunkwhen
yourvehicleisnotinuse.Children
whoplayinvehiclescan
accidentallygettrappedinside.
Teachyourchildrennottoplayin
oraroundvehicles.Knowhowto
operatetheemergencytrunk
openeranddecideifyourchildren
shouldbeshownhowtousethis
feature(seepage98).
Neverholdaninfantorchildon
yourlap.Ifyouarenotwearinga
seatbeltinacrash,youcouldbe
thrownforwardandcrushthe
childagainstthedashboardora
seat-back.Ifyouarewearinga
seatbelt,thechildcanbetorn
fromyourarmsandbeseriously
hurtorkilled.
thelockableretractorisactivated,
andthebeltisfullyretractedand
locked.Ifachildwrapsaloose
seatbeltaroundtheirneck,they
canbeseriouslyorfatallyinjured.

Neverputaseatbeltoveryourself
andachild.Duringacrash,the
beltcouldpressdeepintothechild
andcauseseriousorfatalinjuries.
Donotleavechildrenaloneina
vehicle.Leavingchildrenwithout
adultsupervisionisillegalinmost
statesandCanadianprovinces,
andcanbeveryhazardous.
Forexample,infantsandsmall
childrenleftinavehicleonahot
daycandiefromheatstroke.A
childleftalonewiththekeyinthe
ignitionswitchcanaccidentallyset
thevehicleinmotion,possibly
injuringthemselvesorothers.
Keepvehiclekeysandremote
transmitters outofthereachof
children.Evenveryyoung
childrenlearnhowtounlock
vehicledoors,turnontheignition
switch,andopenthetrunk,which
canleadtoaccidentalinjuryor
death.
Neverlettwochildrenusethe
sameseatbelt.Iftheydo,they
couldbeveryseriouslyinjuredina
crash.
Usechildproofdoorlocksto
preventchildrenfromopeningthe
doors.Thiscanpreventchildren
fromaccidentallyfallingout(see
page 98 ).
