thehighheatisduetooverloading,
theengineshouldstarttocool
downalmostimmediately.Ifit
does,waituntilthetemperature
gaugecomesdowntothemidpoint,
thencontinuedriving.
temperaturegaugeshouldstayin
themidrange.Ifitclimbstothered
mark,youshoulddeterminethe
reason(hotday,drivingupasteep
hill,etc.).
Steamandsprayfroman
overheatedenginecan
seriouslyscaldyou.
Donotopenthehoodifsteam
iscomingout.
Ifthevehicleoverheats,youshould
takeimmediateaction.Theonly
indicationmaybethetemperature
gaugeclimbingtoorabovethered
mark.Oryoumayseesteamor
spraycomingfromunderthehood.
1.Safelypulltothesideoftheroad.
Putthetransmissioninneutral
(M/T)orPark(A/T),andsetthe
parkingbrake.Turnoffall
accessories,andturnonthe
hazardwarningindicators.
4.Ifthetemperaturegaugestaysat
theredmark,turnofftheengine.
5.Lookforanyobviouscoolantleaks,
suchasasplitradiatorhose.
Everythingisstillextremelyhot,
sousecaution.Ifyoufindaleak,it
mustberepairedbeforeyou
continuedriving(seeEmergency
Towingonpage331).
Drivingwiththetemperaturegauge
pointerattheredmarkcancause
seriousdamagetotheengine.
2.Ifyouseesteamand/orspray
comingfromunderthehood,turn
offtheengine.Waituntilyousee
nomoresignsofsteamorspray,
thenopenthehood.
