Asgasolineevaporatesinthefuel
tank,anevaporativeemissions
controlcanisterfilledwithcharcoal
adsorbsthevapor.Itisstoredinthis
canisterwhiletheengineisoff.After
theengineisstartedandwarmedup,
thevaporisdrawnintotheengine
andburnedduringdriving.
Gasolineevaporatingfromthetank
alsoproduceshydrocarbons.Con-
trollingtheproductionofNOx,CO,
andHCisimportanttotheenviron-
ment.Undercertainconditionsof
sunlightandclimate,NOxandHC
reacttoformphotochemical‘‘smog.’’
Carbonmonoxidedoesnotcontri-
butetosmogcreation,butitisa
poisonousgas.
InCanada,Acuravehiclescomply
withtheCanadianMotorVehicle
SafetyStandards(CMVSS)for
Emissionsvalidatthetimetheyare
manufactured.
OnboardRefuelingVapor
Recovery
Theonboardrefuelingvapor
recovery(ORVR)systemcaptures
thefuelvaporsduringrefueling.The
vaporsareadsorbedinacanister
filledwithactivatedcarbon.While
driving,thefuelvaporsaredrawn
intotheengineandburnedoff.
CrankcaseEmissionsControl
System
Yourvehiclehasapositive
crankcaseventilationsystem.This
keepsgassesthatbuildupinthe
engine’scrankcasefromgoinginto
theatmosphere.Thepositive
crankcaseventilationvalveroutes
