will automatically select the most desirable gear for
operation at this temperature. Normal operation will
resume when the transmission fluid temperature has
risen to a suitable level. Refer to the “Note” under
“TorqueConverterClutch”inthissection.
The overdrive automatic transmission contains an elec-
tronicallycontrolled4thspeed(OVERDRIVE).Thetrans-
missionwillautomaticallyshiftfrom3rdgeartoOVER-
DRIVEifthefollowingconditionsarepresent:

• transmissionIfthetransmissionwillautomaticallytemperaturegetsselectextremelythemosthot,desir-the
theenginecoolanthasreachednormaloperatingtem-

transmission temperature becomes hot enough, the 5
“TransmissionTemperatureWarningLight”mayillu-
minate and the transmission may downshift out of
OVERDRIVEuntilthetransmissioncoolsdown.After
the transmission cools down, the transmission will
resumenormaloperation.

The transmission will downshift from OVERDRIVE to
DRIVEiftheacceleratorpedalisfullypressedatvehicle

Ifthevehicleisstartedinextremelycoldtemperatures,
thetransmissionmaynotshiftintoOVERDRIVEand
