The Driver and Passenger Airbag/Inflator Units are
located in the center of the steering wheel and the
passengersideoftheinstrumentpanel.WhentheORC
detectsacollisionrequiringtheairbags,itsignalsthe
inflator units. A large quantity of non-toxic gas is
generatedtoinflatethefrontairbags.Differentairbag
inflationratesarepossible,basedoncollisionseverity
andoccupantsize.Thesteeringwheelhubtrimcover
andtheupperpassengersideoftheinstrumentpanel
separateandfoldoutoftheway,asthebagsinflateto
theirfullsize.Thebagsfullyinflateinabout50to70
milliseconds.Thisisabouthalfofthetimethatittakes
toblinkyoureyes.Thebagsthenquicklydeflatewhile
helpingtorestrainthedriverandfrontpassenger.The

classifies the occupant into categories based on the
measurements made by the seat weight sensors. The
OCMcommunicateswiththeOccupantRestraintCon-
troller(ORC).TheORCusestheoccupantcategoryto
determinewhetherthefrontpassengerairbagshould
be turned off. It also determines the rate of airbag
inflationduringacollision.

YourvehiclehasfourWeightSensorslocatedbetween
theseatandthefloorpan.Theweightsensorsmeasure
applied weight and transfers that information to the
OCM.
