Pureethanolisthealcoholwhichistheintoxicatingagentinliquor,beer
andwine.Itisdistilledfromthefermentationofplantssuchasfieldcorn
andsugarcane.Whenethanolisproducedforuseinmotorfuels,asmall
amountofgasolineisaddedtomakeitunfitforbeverageuse.The
resultingethanolblendiscalleddenaturedfuelethanolmeaningthatitis
denaturedwith2%to5%gasolineandissuitableforautomotiveuse.
Duringthesummerseason,fuelethanolmaycontainamaximumof85%
denaturedethanol(Ed85)and15%unleadedgasoline.Thefuelethanol
hasahigheroctaneratingthanunleadedregularorpremiumgasoline
andthisallowsthedesignofengineswithgreaterefficiencyandpower.
Winterblendsmaycontainupto75%denaturedethanol(Ed75)andup
to25%unleadedgasolinetoenhancecoldenginestarts.Severelycold
weathermayrequireadditionalmeasuresforreliablestarting.
Ethanolismorechemicallyactivethangasoline.Itcorrodessomemetals
andcausessomeplasticandrubbercomponentstoswell,breakdownor
becomebrittleandcrack,especiallywhenmixedwithgasoline.Special
materialsandprocedureshavebeendevelopedforflexiblefuelvehicles
andthedispensersusedbyethanolfuelproviders.
WARNING:Flexiblefuelcomponentsandstandardunleaded
gasolinefuelcomponentsarenotinterchangeable.Ifyourvehicle
isnotservicedinaccordancewithflexiblefuelvehiclesprocedures,
damagemayoccurandyourwarrantymaybeinvalidated.
WARNING:Whenrefuelingalwaysshuttheengineoffand
neverallowsparksoropenflamesnearthefillerneck.Never
smokewhilerefueling.Fuelvaporisextremelyhazardousundercertain
conditions.Careshouldbetakentoavoidinhalingexcessfumes.
WARNING:Theflowoffuelthroughafuelpumpnozzlecan
producestaticelectricity,whichcancauseafireiffuelis
pumpedintoanungroundedfuelcontainer.
