Gearchanginginhighrange
Theroadspeedsatwhichgearchangestake
placevaryaccordingtothepositionofthe
accelerator;minimumaccelerationwillresult
ingearchangesatlowroadspeeds,while
greaterthrottleopeningswillcausethe
gearboxtodelaygearchangesuntilfaster
roadspeedshavebeenreached(thereby
increasingacceleration).
MODESWITCH
InHighrange,themodeswitchisusedto
select’Sport’mode.
InLowrange,pressingthesameswitch
selects’Manual’mode.
Pressingtheswitchasecondtimereturnsthe
gearboxtoitsnormaloperation.
’Sport’mode
Whenacceleratingin’Sport’mode,gear
changingisdelayedtomakeoptimumuseof
theengine’spower.Selectwhenincreased
accelerationisrequired,orwhennegotiating
longinclinesortwistingroads.However,you
shouldbeawarethatdrivingin’Sport’mode
willincreasefuelconsumption.
Withpractice,gearchangescanbemadeto
occuratawiderangeofdifferentroadspeeds
dependingonacceleratorpedalpressure.
Onlonginclines,anautomaticgearboxwill
sometimeschangebackandforthbetween
gears.Thisoccursbecausethetransmission
doesnotincludearatiothatispreciselyright
fortheparticularinclineandvehicleloading
circumstances.Excessivegearchangingis
wastefuloffuelandresultsinalossof
momentum;itcanbepreventedbyselecting
the’3’or’2’positionswhichlimitthegearbox
tolowerratios.

Kick-down’
Toproviderapidaccelerationforovertaking,
kick’theacceleratorpedaltothefullextentof
’
itstravelinasingle,quickmovement(thisis
knownas’kick-down’).Uptoacertainspeed,
thiswillcauseanimmediatedownshiftinto
thelowestappropriategear,followedbyrapid
acceleration.Oncethepedalisrelaxed,normal
gearchangespeedswillresume(dependent
onroadspeedandacceleratorpedalposition).
Toselect’Sport’mode,pressthe’Mode’
switchoncewhilstthegearboxisinHigh
range(themessagecentrewilldisplay’S’
alongwiththeselectedgear,eg.’S3’).
