Seating and safety restraints
TheairbagSRSisdesignedtoactivatewhenthevehiclesustainslateral
decelerationsufficienttocausethesensorstocloseanelectricalcircuit
thatinitiatesairbaginflation.
Thefactthattheairbagsdidnotinflateinacollisiondoesnotmeanthat
somethingiswrongwiththesystem.Rather,itmeanstheforceswere
notofthetypesufficienttocauseactivation.Sideairbagsaredesigned
toinflateinside-impactcollisions,notroll-over,rear-impact,frontalor
near-frontalcollisions,unlessthecollisioncausessufficientlateral
deceleration.
Severalairbagsystem
componentsgethotafter
inflation.Donottouchthemafter
inflation.
Ifthesideairbaghas
deployed,theairbagwill
notfunctionagain.Theside
airbagsystem(includingthe
seat)mustbeinspectedand
servicedbyaqualified
technicianinaccordancewith
thevehicleservicemanual.If
theairbagisnotreplaced,the
unrepairedareawillincreasethe
riskofinjuryinacollision.
Determining if the system is operational
TheSRSusesareadinesslightintheinstrumentclusteroratoneto
indicatetheconditionofthesystem.RefertotheAirbagreadiness
sectionintheInstrumentationchapter.Routinemaintenanceoftheair
bagisnotrequired.
Adifficultywiththesystemisindicatedbyoneormoreofthefollowing:

Thereadinesslight(samelightasforfrontairbagsystem)willeither
flashorstaylit.
Thereadinesslightwillnotilluminateimmediatelyafterignitionis
turnedon.
