TRANSMISSION FLUID
Checking automatic transmission fluid (if equipped)
Refertoyourscheduledmaintenanceguideforscheduledintervalsfor
fluidchecksandchanges.Yourtransmissiondoesnotconsumefluid.
However,thefluidlevelshouldbecheckedifthetransmissionisnot
workingproperly,i.e.,ifthetransmissionslipsorshiftsslowlyorifyou
noticesomesignoffluidleakage.
Automatictransmissionfluidexpandswhenwarmed.Toobtainan
accuratefluidcheck,drivethevehicleuntilitisatnormaloperating
temperature(approximately30km[20miles]).Ifyourvehiclehasbeen
operatedforanextendedperiodathighspeeds,incitytrafficduringhot
weatherorpullingatrailer,thevehicleshouldbeturnedoffforabout
30
minutestoallowfluidtocoolbeforechecking.

Drivethevehicle30km(20miles)oruntilitreachesnormaloperating
temperature.
2.
Parkthevehicleonalevelsurfaceandengagetheparkingbrake.
3.
starttheengineandmovethegearshiftleverthroughallofthegear
ranges.Allowsufficienttimeforeachgeartoengage.
Withtheparkingbrakeengagedandyourfootonthebrakepedal,

LatchthegearshiftleverinP(Park)andleavetheenginerunning.
5.
Removethedipstick,wipingitcleanwithaclean,drylintfreerag.If
necessary,refertoIdentifyingcomponentsintheenginecompartment
inthischapterforthelocationofthedipstick.
6.
Installthedipstickmakingsureitisfullyseatedinthefillertube.
7.
thedesignatedareafornormaloperatingtemperatureorambient
temperature.
Removethedipstickandinspectthefluidlevel.Thefluidshouldbein
Low fluid level
Donotdrivethevehicleifthefluid
levelisatthebottomofthedipstick
andtheambienttemperatureis
above10°C(50°F).
