normalandindicatesproperfunctioningofthevehicle’santi-lockbrake
system.
NOTE:TheABSperformsaself-checkafteryoustarttheengineand
begintodriveaway.
Abriefmechanicalnoisemaybeheardduringthistest.Thisisnormal.If
amalfunctionisfound,theABSwarninglightwillcomeon.Ifthevehicle
hascontinuousvibrationorshudderinthesteeringwheelwhilebraking,
thevehicleshouldbeinspectedbyanauthorizeddealer.
TheABSoperatesbydetectingthe
onsetofwheellockupduringbrake
applicationsandcompensatesfor
thistendency.Thewheelsare
preventedfromlockingevenwhen
thebrakesarefirmlyapplied.The
accompanyingillustrationdepicts
theadvantageofanABSequipped
vehicle(onbottom)toanon-ABS
equippedvehicle(ontop)duringhardbrakingwithlossoffrontbraking
traction.
WARNING: TheAnti-Locksystemdoesnotdecreasethetime
necessarytoapplythebrakesoralwaysreducestopping
distance.Alwaysleaveenoughroombetweenyourvehicleand
thevehicleinfrontofyoutostop.
Using ABS
Whenhardbrakingisrequired,applycontinuousforceonthebrake
pedal;donotpumpthebrakepedalsincethiswillreducethe
effectivenessoftheABSandwillincreaseyourvehicle’sstopping
distance.TheABSwillbeactivatedimmediately,allowingyoutoretain
steeringcontrolduringhardbrakingandonslipperysurfaces.However,
theABSdoesnotdecreasestoppingdistance.
