Theairbagsinflateanddeflate
rapidlyuponactivation.Afterairbag
deployment,itisnormaltonoticea
smoke-like,powderyresidueor
smelltheburntpropellant.Thismay
consistofcornstarch,talcum
powder(tolubricatethebag)or
sodiumcompounds(e.g.,baking
soda)thatresultfromthe
combustionprocessthatinflatesthe
airbag.Smallamountsofsodium
hydroxidemaybepresentwhich
mayirritatetheskinandeyes,but
noneoftheresidueistoxic.
Whilethesystemisdesignedtohelp
reduceseriousinjuries,itmayalso
causeminorabrasions,swellingortemporaryhearingloss.Because
airbagsmustinflaterapidlyandwithconsiderableforce,thereistherisk
ofdeathorseriousinjuriessuchasfractures,facialandeyeinjuriesor
internalinjuries,particularlytooccupantswhoarenotproperly
restrainedorareotherwiseoutofpositionatthetimeofairbag
deployment.Thus,itisextremelyimportantthatoccupantsbeproperly
restrainedasfarawayfromtheairbagmoduleaspossiblewhile
maintainingvehiclecontrol.
WARNING: Severalairbagsystemcomponentsgethotafter
inflation.Donottouchthemafterinflationoryoumaybe
burned.
WARNING: Iftheairbaghasdeployed,theairbagwillnot
functionagainandmustbereplacedimmediately.Iftheairbag
isnotreplaced,theunrepairedareawillincreasetheriskof
injuryinacollision.
Determining if the system is operational
TheSRSusesreadinesslightsintheinstrumentclusteroratoneto
indicatetheconditionofthesystem.RefertotheAirbagreadiness
sectionintheInstrumentationchapter.Routinemaintenanceofthe
airbagisnotrequired.
