Whendrivingthroughwater,determinethedepth;avoidwaterhigher
thanthebottomofthehubs(ifpossible)andproceedslowly.Ifthe
ignitionsystemgetswet,thevehiclemaystall.
Oncethroughwater,alwaystrythebrakes.Wetbrakesdonotstopthe
vehicleaseffectivelyasdrybrakes.Dryingcanbeimprovedbymoving
yourvehicleslowlywhileapplyinglightpressureonthebrakepedal.
Afterdrivingthroughmud,cleanoffresiduestucktothedriveshaftsand
tires.Excessmudstuckontiresandrotatingdriveshaftscausesan
imbalancethatcoulddamagedrivecomponents.
Ifthetransmission,transfercaseorfrontaxlearesubmergedinwater,
theirfluidsshouldbecheckedandchanged,ifnecessary.
Drivingthroughdeepwaterwherethetransmissionventtubeis
submergedmayallowwaterintothetransmissionandcause
internaltransmissiondamage.
Replacerearaxlelubricantanytimetheaxlehasbeensubmergedin
water.Therearaxledoesnotnormallyrequirealubricantchangeforthe
lifeofthevehicle.Rearaxlelubricantquantitiesarenottobecheckedor
changedunlessaleakissuspectedorrepairisrequired.
Driving on hilly or sloping terrain
Whendrivingonahill,avoiddrivingcrosswiseorturningonsteep
slopes.Youcouldlosetractionandslipsideways.Drivestraightup,
straightdownoravoidthehillcompletely.Knowtheconditionsonthe
othersideofahillbeforedrivingoverthecrest.
Whenclimbingasteephill,startinalowergearratherthandownshifting
toalowergearfromahighergearoncetheascenthasstarted.This
reducesstrainontheengineandthepossibilityofstalling.
Whendescendingasteephill,avoidsuddenbraking.Shifttoalowergear
whenaddedenginebrakingisdesired.
Whenspeedcontrolisonandyouaredrivinguphill,yourvehiclespeed
maydropconsiderably,especiallyifyouarecarryingaheavyload.
Ifvehiclespeeddropsmorethan10mph(16km/h),thespeedcontrol
willcancelautomatically.Resumespeedwithacceleratorpedal.
Ifspeedcontrolcancelsafterclimbingthehill,resetspeedbypressing
andholdingtheSETACCELbutton(toresumespeedsover30mph
[50
km/h]).
Automatictransmissionsmayshiftfrequentlywhiledrivingupsteep
grades.Eliminatefrequentshiftingbyshiftingoutof
alowergear.
