Maintenance and care
Iftheenginecoolanthasnotbeencheckedforalongperiodoftime,the
enginecoolantreservoirmayeventuallyempty.Ifthisoccurs,addengine
coolanttothecoolantreservoir.Formoreinformationonenginecoolant
maintenance,refertoAddingenginecoolantinthischapter.
Automotivefluidsarenotinterchangeable;donotuseenginecoolant,
antifreezeorwindshieldwasherfluidoutsideofitsspecifiedfunctionand
vehiclelocation.
Adding engine coolant
Donotputenginecoolantinthecontainerforthewindshield
washerfluid.
Ifsprayedonthewindshield,enginecoolantcouldmakeitdifficulttosee
throughthewindshield.
Whentheengineiscool,adda50/50mixtureofenginecoolantand
watertotheenginecoolantrecoveryreservoir-DONOTADDDIRECTLY
TOTHERADIATOR.Addstraightwateronlyinanemergency,butyou
shouldreplaceitwitha50/50mixtureofcoolantanddistilledwateras
soonaspossible.
Checkthecoolantlevelinthecoolantrecoveryreservoirthenextfew
timesyoudrivethevehicle.Ifnecessary,addenoughofa50/50mixture
ofcoolantandwatertobringtheliquidleveltothefilllineonthe
reservoir.
Neverremovethecoolantrecoverycapwhiletheengineis
runningorhot.
Ifyoumustremovethecoolantrecoverycap,followthesestepstoavoid
personalinjury:
1.
Beforeyouremovethecap,turntheengineoffandletitcool.
2.
Whentheengineiscool,wrapathickclotharoundthecap.Slowly
turncapcounterclockwiseuntilpressurebeginstorelease.
3.
Stepbackwhilethepressurereleases.
4.
Whenyouaresurethatallthepressurehasbeenreleased,usethe
clothtoturnitcounterclockwiseandremovethecap.
