How does the air bag  supplemental restraint system work?
TheSRSisdesignedtoactivate
whenthevehiclesustainssufficient
longitudinaldeceleration.
Thefactthattheairbagsdidnot
inflateinacollisiondoesnotmean
thatsomethingiswrongwiththe
system.Rather,itmeanstheforces
werenotofthetypesufficientto
causeactivation.
Theairbagsinflateanddeflate
rapidlyuponactivation.
Afterairbagdeployment,itis
normaltonoticeasmoke-like,
powderyresidueorsmelltheburnt
propellant.Thismayconsistof
cornstarch,talcumpowder(to
lubricatethebag)orsodium
compounds(e.g.,bakingsoda)that
resultfromthecombustionprocess
thatinflatestheairbag.Small
amountsofsodiumhydroxidemay
bepresentwhichmayirritatethe
skinandeyes,butnoneofthe
residueistoxic.
Severalairbagsystemcomponentsgethotafterinflation.Donot
touchthemafterinflation.
