Readiness for inspection/maintenance (I/M) testing
Insomelocalities,itmaybealegalrequirementtopassanI/Mtestof
theon-boarddiagnostic(OBD-II)system.Ifyour‘‘checkengine/service
enginesoon’’lightison,referencetheapplicablelightdescriptioninthe
WarningLightsandChimessectionofyourownersguide.Yourvehicle
maynotpasstheI/Mtestwiththe‘‘checkengine/serviceenginesoon’’
lighton.
Ifthevehicle’spowertrainsystemoritsbatteryhasjustbeenserviced,
theOBD-IIsystemisresettoa‘‘notreadyforI/Mtest’’condition.To
readytheOBD-IIsystemforI/Mtesting,aminimumof30minutesofcity
andhighwaydrivingisnecessaryasdescribedbelow:
First,atleast10minutesofdrivingonanexpresswayorhighway.
Next,atleast20minutesdrivinginstopandgo,citytypetrafficwith
atleastfouridleperiods.
Allowthevehicletositforatleasteighthourswithoutstartingthe
engine.Then,starttheengineandcompletetheabovedrivingcycle.The
enginemustwarmuptoitsnormaloperatingtemperature.Oncestarted,
donotturnofftheengineuntiltheabovedrivingcycleiscomplete.
