What you should do if  the check engine light illuminates
Lightturnsonsolid:
ThismeansthattheOBDIIsystemhasdetectedamalfunction.
TemporarymalfunctionsmaycauseyourCheckEnginelightto
illuminate.Examplesare:
1.
Thevehiclehasrunoutoffuel.(Theenginemaymisfireorrun
poorly.)
2.
3.
Poorfuelqualityorwaterinthefuel.
Thefuelcapmaynothavebeenproperlyinstalledandsecurely
tightened.
Thesetemporarymalfunctionscanbecorrectedbyfillingthefueltank
withgoodqualityfueland/orproperlyinstallingandsecurelytightening
thegascap.Afterthreedrivingcycleswithouttheseoranyother
temporarymalfunctionspresent,theCheckEnginelightshouldturnoff.
(Adrivingcycleconsistsofacoldenginestartupfollowedbymixed
city/highwaydriving.)Noadditionalvehicleserviceisrequired.
IftheCheckEnginelightremainson,haveyourvehicleservicedatthe
firstavailableopportunity.
Lightisblinking:
Enginemisfireisoccurringwhichcoulddamageyourcatalyticconverter.
Youshoulddriveinamoderatefashion(avoidheavyaccelerationand
deceleration)andhaveyourvehicleservicedatthefirstavailable
opportunity.
Underenginemisfireconditions,excessiveexhausttemperatures
coulddamagethecatalyticconverter,thefuelsystem,interior
floorcoveringsorothervehiclecomponents,possiblycausingafire.
Fuel reset
Illuminateswhentheignitionkeyis
turnedtotheONpositionandthe
fuelpumpshut-offswitchhasbeen
triggered.Formoreinformation,
refertoFuelpumpshut-offswitch
intheRoadsideemergencies
chapter.
