Donotusehitchesthatclampontothevehicle’sbumperorattachtothe
axle.Youmustdistributetheloadinyourtrailersothat10%–15%ofthe
totalweightofthetrailerisonthetongue.
Weight distributing hitch
Whenhookingupatrailerusingaloadequalizinghitch,alwaysusethe
followingprocedure:
1.
Parktheunloadedvehicleonalevelsurface.Withtheignitiononand
alldoorsclosed,allowthevehicletostandforseveralminutessothatit
canlevel.
2.
Measuretheheightofareferencepointonthefrontandrearbumpers
atthecenterofthevehicle.
3.
Attachthetrailertothevehicleandadjustthehitchequalizerssothat

Note:Adjustingaweightdistributinghitchsotherearbumperofthe
vehicleishigherthanitwasunloadedwilldefeatthefunctionofthe
weightdistributinghitchandmaycauseunpredictablehandling.
Safety chains
Alwaysconnectthetrailer’ssafetychainstotheframeorhookretainers
ofthevehiclehitch.Toconnectthetrailer’ssafetychains,crossthe
chainsunderthetrailertongueandallowslackforturningcorners.
Ifyouusearentaltrailer,followtheinstructionsthattherentalagency
givestoyou.
Donotattachsafetychainstothebumper.
Trailer brakes
Electricbrakesandmanual,automaticorsurge-typetrailerbrakesaresafeif
installedproperlyandadjustedtothemanufacturer’sspecifications.The
trailerbrakesmustmeetlocalandFederalregulations.
Donotconnectatrailer’shydraulicbrakesystemdirectlytoyour
vehicle’sbrakesystem.Yourvehiclemaynothaveenough
brakingpowerandyourchancesofhavingacollisiongreatlyincrease.
Thebrakingsystemofthetowvehicleisratedforoperationatthe
GVWRnotGCWR.
