Starting the engine
1.
Turnthekeyto3(ON)without
turningthekeyto4(START).If
thereisdifficultyinturningthekey,
rotatethesteeringwheeluntilthe
keyturnsfreely.
2.
Turnthekeyto4(START),then
releasethekeyassoonasthe
enginestarts.
Note:Iftheenginedoesnotstartwithinfivesecondsonthefirsttry,
turnthekeytoOFF,wait10secondsandtryagain.Iftheenginestill
failstostart,pressandholdtheacceleratortothefloorandtryagain;
thiswillallowtheenginetocrankwiththefuelshutoffincasethe
engineisfloodedwithfuel.
Ifyourvehiclehasanautomatictransmission,itwillhaveacomputer
assistedcrankingsystem.Thisfeatureassistsinstartingtheengine.If
theignitionkeyisturnedto4(START)andthenreleasedwhenthe
enginebeginscranking,theenginemaycontinuecrankingforupto10
secondsoruntilthevehiclestarts.
Cold weather starting (flexible fuel vehicles only)
Astheoutsidetemperatureapproachesfreezing,ethanolfueldistributors
shouldsupplywintergradeethanol(sameaswithunleadedgasoline).If
summergradeethanolisusedincoldweatherconditions,youmay
experienceincreasedcrankingtimes,roughidleorhesitationuntilthe
enginehaswarmedup.Consultyourfueldistributorfortheavailabilityof
wintergradeethanol.
Donotcranktheengineformorethan30secondsatatimeasstarter
damagemayoccur.Iftheenginefailstostart,turnthekeytoOFFand
wait30secondsbeforetryingagain.
Donotusestartingfluidsuchasetherintheairintakesystem.Such
fluidcouldcauseimmediateexplosivedamagetotheengineandpossible
personalinjury.
IfyoushouldexperiencecoldweatherstartingproblemsonE85
ethanol,
andneitheranalternativebrandofE ethanolnoranengineblock
85
heaterisavailable,theadditionofunleadedgasolinetoyourtankwill
improvecoldstartingperformance.Yourvehicleisdesignedtooperate
onE85 ethanolalone,unleadedgasolinealone,oranymixtureofthetwo.
