Frontsafetybeltpretensioners
Thesafetybeltpretensionersatthefrontoutboardseatingpositionsare
designedtotightenthesafetybeltsfirmlyagainsttheoccupant’sbody
duringfrontalcollisions,andinsidecollisionsandrollovers.Thishelps
increasetheeffectivenessofthesafetybelts.Infrontalcollisions,the
safetybeltpretensionerscanbeactivatedaloneor,ifthecollisionisof
sufficientseverity,togetherwiththefrontairbags.
Safetybeltenergymanagementretractors
Thefrontandrearoutboardsafetybeltenergymanagementretractors
allowwebbingtobepulledoutoftheretractorinagradualand
controlledmannerinresponsetotheoccupant’sforwardmomentum.
Thishelpsreducetheriskofforce-relatedinjuriestotheoccupant’s
chestbylimitingtheloadontheoccupant.RefertoEnergy
managementfeatureinthischapter.
DeterminingifthePersonalSafetySystemisoperational
ThePersonalSafetySystemusesawarninglightintheinstrument
clusteroraback-uptonetoindicatetheconditionofthesystem.Refer
totheWarninglightsandchimessectionintheInstrumentCluster
chapter.RoutinemaintenanceofthePersonalSafetySystemisnot
required.
Therestraintscontrolmodule(RCM)monitorsitsowninternalcircuits
andthecircuitsfortheairbagsupplementalrestraints,crashsensor(s),
safetybeltpretensioners,frontsafetybeltbucklesensors,driverseat
positionsensor,andfrontpassengersensingsystem.Inaddition,the
RCMalsomonitorstherestraintswarninglightintheinstrumentcluster.
Adifficultywiththesystemisindicatedbyoneormoreofthefollowing.

Thewarninglightwilleitherflashorstaylit.
Thewarninglightwillnotilluminateimmediatelyafterignitionis
turnedon.

Aseriesoffivebeepswillbeheard.Thetonepatternwillrepeat
periodicallyuntiltheproblemandwarninglightarerepaired.
Ifanyofthesethingshappen,evenintermittently,havethePersonal
SafetySystemservicedatanauthorizeddealerimmediately.Unless
serviced,thesystemmaynotfunctionproperlyintheeventofa
collision.
