Positions of the ignition
1.
Off—locksthegearshiftlever
andallowskeyremoval.Note:In
ordertoswitchofftheenginewhile
thevehicleisinmotion,shiftto
neutralandusethebrakestobring
thevehicletoasafestop.Afterthe
vehiclehasstopped,turntheengine
offandshiftintopark.Then,turn
thekeytotheaccessoryoroff
position.
2.
Accessory—allowstheelectrical
accessoriessuchastheradiotooperatewhiletheengineisnotrunning.
3.
On—allelectricalcircuitsoperationalandwarninglightswill
illuminate.Thisisthepositionthekeyisinwhenyou’redriving.
4.
Start—crankstheengine.Releasethekeyassoonastheengine
starts.

Enginestartingiscontrolledbythepowertraincontrolsystem.
ThissystemmeetsallCanadianinterference-causingequipmentstandard
requirementsregulatingtheimpulseelectricalfieldstrengthofradio
noise.
Whenstartingafuel-injectedengine,avoidpressingtheaccelerator
beforeorduringstarting.Onlyusetheacceleratorwhenyouhave
difficultystartingtheengine.Formoreinformationonstartingthe
vehicle,refertoStartingtheengineinthischapter.
WARNING:Extendedidlingathighenginespeedscanproduce
veryhightemperaturesintheengineandexhaustsystem,
creatingtheriskoffireorotherdamage.
WARNING:Donotpark,idle,ordriveyourvehicleindrygrass
orotherdrygroundcover.Theemissionsystemheatsupthe
enginecompartmentandexhaustsystem,whichcanstartafire.
