FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE (4WD) OPERATION (IF EQUIPPED)
Forimportantinformationregardingsafeoperationofthistype
ofvehicle,seePreparingtodriveyourvehicleinthischapter.
Whenfour–wheeldrive(4WD)isengaged,powerissuppliedtoallfour
wheelsthroughatransfercase.4WDcanbeselectedwhenadditional
drivingpowerisdesired.
IfequippedwiththeElectronicShift4WDSystem,and4WDLow
isselectedwhilethevehicleismoving,the4WDsystemwillnot
engage.Thisisnormalandshouldbenoreasonforconcern.
Before4WDLowcanbeengaged,thevehiclemustbebroughtto
acompletestop,thebrakepedaldepressedandthetransmission
placedinneutral(ortheclutchpedaldepressedonmanual
transmissions).
4WDoperationisnotrecommendedondrypavement.Doingsocould
resultindifficultdisengagementofthetransfercase,increasedtirewear
anddecreasedfueleconomy.
4WD system indicator lights
The4WDsystemindicatorlightsilluminateonlyunderthefollowing
conditions.Iftheselightsilluminatewhendrivingin2WD,contactyour
Forddealerassoonaspossible.

4WD-momentarilyilluminates
whenthevehicleisstarted.
Illuminateswhen4H(4WDHigh)
isengaged.

4WDLOW–momentarily
4WD
LOW
illuminateswhenthevehicleis
started.Illuminateswhen4L
(4WD
Low)isengaged.
Using a manual 4WD system (if equipped)
2H(2WDHigh)–Powertorearaxleonly.
4H(4WDHigh)–Powertofrontandrearaxles.
N(Neutral)–Nopowertoeitheraxle.
4L(4WDLow)–Powertofrontandrearaxlesatreducedspeed.
