theon-boarddiagnosticssystem.Ifyour“CheckEngine/ServiceEngine
Soon”lightison,refertothedescriptionintheWarninglightsand
chimessectionoftheInstrumentclusterchapter.Yourvehiclemaynot
passtheI/Mtestwiththe“CheckEngine/ServiceEngineSoon”lighton.
Ifthevehicle’spowertrainsystemoritsbatteryhasjustbeenserviced,
theon-boarddiagnosticssystemisresettoa“notreadyforI/Mtest”
condition.Toreadytheon-boarddiagnosticssystemforI/Mtesting,a
minimumof30minutesofcityandhighwaydrivingisnecessaryas
describedbelow:

First,atleast10minutesofdrivingonanexpresswayorhighway.
Next,atleast20minutesdrivinginstop-and-go,city-typetrafficwith
atleastfouridleperiods.
Allowthevehicletositforatleasteighthourswithoutstartingthe
engine.Then,starttheengineandcompletetheabovedrivingcycle.The
enginemustwarmuptoitsnormaloperatingtemperature.Oncestarted,
donotturnofftheengineuntiltheabovedrivingcycleiscomplete.
