Ifthetemperaturegaugeindicates
overheating,thevehiclelosespower,or
youhearaloudknockingorpinging
noise,theengineisprobablytoohot.
Applytheparkingbrake.
4. Turnofftheairconditioner.

Checkwhethercoolantorsteamis
escapingfromunderthehoodorfrom
theenginecompartment.
WARNING
Switchtheignitiontooffand
makesurethefanisnotrunningbefore
attemptingtoworknearthecooling
fan:
Workingnearthecoolingfanwhenit
isrunningisdangerous.Thefan
couldcontinuerunningindefinitely
eveniftheenginehasstoppedand
theenginecompartmenttemperature
ishigh.Youcouldbehitbythefan
andseriouslyinjured.
Ifsteamiscomingfromtheengine
compartment:
Don'tgonearthefrontofthevehicle.
Stoptheengine.
Waituntilthesteamdissipates,then
openthehoodandstarttheengine.
Ifneithercoolantnorsteamis
escaping:
Openthehoodandidletheengineuntil
itcools.
CAUTION
Ifthecoolingfandoesnotoperate
whiletheengineisrunning,the
enginetemperaturewillincrease.
Stoptheengineandcallan
Donotremoveeithercooling
systemcapswhentheengineand
radiatorarehot:
Whentheengineandradiatorare
hot,scaldingcoolantandsteammay
shootoutunderpressureandcause
seriousinjury.

6. Makesurethecoolingfanisoperating,
thenturnofftheengineafterthe
temperaturehasdecreased.
OpenthehoodONLYaftersteamisno
longerescapingfromtheengine:
Steamfromanoverheatedengineis
dangerous.Theescapingsteamcould
seriouslyburnyou.
7. Whencool,checkthecoolantlevel.
Ifit'slow,lookforcoolantleaksfrom
theradiatorandhoses.
Ifthetemperaturegaugeindicates
overheating:

Drivesafelytothesideoftheroadand
parkofftheright-of-way.
