Improperorinadequatevehiclemaintenancecanalsocausetirestowear
abnormally.Herearesomeoftheimportantmaintenanceitems:
Tire wear
Measureandinspectthetiretreadonallyourtiresperiodically.
Advancedandunusualtirewearcanreducetheabilityoftreadtogrip
theroadinadverse(wet,snowy,etc.)conditions.Visuallycheckyour
tiresforunevenwear,lookingforhighandlowareasorunusually
smoothareas.Alsocheckforsignsoftiredamage.
Whenthetreadisworndownto
1/16th
ofaninch(2mm),tiresmust
bereplacedtopreventyourvehicle
fromskiddingandhydroplaning.
Built-intreadwearindicators,or
“wearbars”,whichlooklikenarrow
stripsofsmoothrubberacrossthe
treadwillappearonthetirewhen
thetreadisworndownto1/16thof
aninch(2mm).Whenthetiretread
wearsdowntothesameheightas
these“wearbars”,thetireisworn
outandshouldbereplaced.
Inspectyourtiresfrequentlyforany
ofthefollowingconditionsand
replacethemifoneormoreofthe
followingconditionsexist:

Fabricshowingthroughthetire
rubber
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Bulgesinthetreadorsidewalls
Cracksorcutsonthesidewalls
Cracksinthetreadgroove
Impactdamageresultingfromuse
Separationinthetread
Separationinthesidewall
Severeabrasiononthesidewall
Ifyourvehiclehasaleakintheexhaustsystem,aroadtireorthespare
tiremaybeexposedtohotexhausttemperaturesrequiringthetiretobe
replaced.
