TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS)(IF EQUIPPED)
WhentheTirePressureMonitoring
Systemwarninglightislit,oneor
moreofyourtiresissignificantly
under-inflated.Youshouldstopand
checkyourtiresassoonaspossible,
andinflatethemtotheproperpressureasindicatedonthevehicle’stire
informationplacard(label).Drivingonasignificantlyunder-inflatedtire
causesthetiretooverheatandcaneventuallyleadtotirefailure.
Under-inflationalsoreducesfuelefficiencyandtiretreadlife,andmay
affectthevehicle’shandlingandstoppingability.Evenifyourvehicleis
equippedwithaTirePressureMonitoringSystem,itisstillimportant
thatyoumanuallychecktheinflationpressureofyourtiresregularly.
Eachtire,includingthespare,shouldbecheckedmonthlywhencoldand
settotherecommendedinflationpressurewhichcanbefoundoneither
theSafetyComplianceCertificationLabelwhichislocatedontheB-Pillar
ortheedgeofthedriver’sdoor.
TheTirePressureMonitoringSystemisNOTasubstitutefor
manuallycheckingtirepressure.Thetirepressureshouldbe
checkedperiodically(atleastmonthly)usingatiregauge,see
Inspectingandinflatingyourtiresinthischapter.Failureto
properlymaintainyourtirepressurecouldincreasetheriskoftire
failure,lossofcontrol,vehiclerolloverandpersonalinjury.
ChangingtireswithTPMS
Itisrecommendedthatyoualways
haveyourtiresservicedbyadealer
orqualifiedtechnician.Eachroad
tireisequippedwithatire
pressuresensormountedonthe
wheelinsidethetireconnected
tothevalvestem.Thetire
pressuresensormustbe
unboltedfromthewheelpriorto
tireremoval.Thesensorcanbe
removedbylooseningthenutatthevalvestem.Failureto
removethesensormaydamageit.Therubbergrommet(washer)
betweenthewheelandthetirepressuresensorneedstobereplaced
wheneverthesensorisremovedtominimizeairleaks.
