bedriventemporarilybeforeincrementalcomponentdamageisincurred.
The“fail-safe”distancedependsonambienttemperatures,vehicleload
andterrain.

Theenginecoolanttemperaturegaugewillmovetothered(hot)
area.
HIGHTEMPLOWOIL(ifequipped)orCHECKGAUGE(ifequipped)
willilluminate.
TheServiceenginesoonindicatorlightwillilluminate.
Iftheenginereachesapresetover-temperaturecondition,theengine
willautomaticallyswitchtoalternatingcylinderoperation.Eachdisabled
cylinderactsasanairpumpandcoolstheengine.
Whenthisoccursthevehiclewillstilloperate.However:

Theenginepowerwillbelimited.
Theairconditioningsystemwillbedisabled.
Continuedoperationwillincreasetheenginetemperature:

Theenginewillcompletelyshutdown.
Steeringandbrakingeffortwillincrease.
Oncetheenginetemperaturecools,theenginecanbere-started.Take
yourvehicletoaservicefacilityassoonaspossibletominimizeengine
damage.
Whenfail-safemodeisactivated
Youhavelimitedenginepowerwheninthefail-safemode,sodrivethe
vehiclewithcaution.Thevehiclewillnotbeabletomaintainhighspeed
operationandtheenginewillrunrough.Rememberthattheengineis
capableofcompletelyshuttingdownautomaticallytopreventengine
damage,therefore:
