Filling the tank
Theadvertisedfuelcapacityofthefueltankonyourvehicleisequalto
theratedrefillcapacityofthefueltankaslistedintheRefillcapacities
sectionofthischapter.
Theadvertisedcapacityistheamountoftheindicatedcapacityandthe
emptyreservecombined.Indicatedcapacityisthedifferenceinthe
amountoffuelinafulltankandatankwhenthefuelgaugeindicates
empty.Emptyreserveisthesmallamountoffuelremaininginthefuel
tankafterthefuelgaugeindicatesempty.
Theamountofusablefuelintheemptyreservevariesandshould
notbereliedupontoincreasedrivingrange.Whenrefuelingyour
vehicleafterthefuelgaugeindicatesempty,youmightnotbe
abletorefuelthefullamountoftheadvertisedcapacityofthe
fueltankduetotheemptyreservestillpresentinthetank.

Turntheengine/ignitionswitchtotheoffpositionpriortorefueling,
anerrorinthereadingwillresultiftheengineisleftrunning.
Usethesamefillingratesetting(low—medium—high)eachtime
thetankisfilled.

Alwaysusefuelwiththerecommendedoctanerating.
Useaknownqualitygasoline,preferablyanationalbrand.
Usethesamesideofthesamepumpandhavethevehiclefacingthe

Havethevehicleloadinganddistributionthesameeverytime.
Yourresultswillbemostaccurateifyourfillingmethodisconsistent.
FillingthetankforFFVequippedvehicles
Yourvehiclewilloperateonbothunleadedgasolinewithanoctanerating
of87,orE-85fuel,oranymixtureofthesetwo.Forbestresultsitis
recommendedthatyoudonotaddlessthanfivegallonsoffuelwhen
refueling.Observingthisprecautionwillavoidpossiblehardstarting
and/ordeteriorationindrivabilityduringwarmup.
Calculating fuel economy

Fillthefueltankcompletelyandrecordtheinitialodometerreading
(inmilesorkilometers).

Eachtimeyoufillthetank,recordtheamountoffueladded(in
gallonsorliters).
