In addition to the small size, the inflating gasses exit
through strategically placed vents, which direct the gas
awayfromtheoccupant.
Thefrontairbagsystemhasdual-stagedriverandfront
passenger airbags. This system provides output appro-
priatetothelevelofcrashseverityasdeterminedbythe
Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) and the impact
sensorsatthefrontofthecar.
FrontPassengerAirbagSpecialFeatures
Anewactiveventingfront-passengerairbagisdesigned
to reduce the risk of occupants who may be out of
position by the use of active vents positioned on each
sideoftheairbag.
Thefirststageinflatoristriggeredimmediatelyduringan
impact that requires airbag deployment. The timing of
thesecondstagedetermineswhethertheoutputforceis
low,medium,orhigh.Ifalowoutputissufficienttomeet
theneed,thesecondstageisexpendedlaterinthecrash
event.
SupplementalFrontSeat-MountedThoraxSide
Airbags
Front seat mounted side (Thorax) airbags provide en-
hancedprotectionandworktogetherwithsupplemental
SideAirbag Inflatable Curtains (SABIC) to help protect
anoccupantduringasideimpact.Theseat-mountedside
airbag is marked with an airbag label sewn into the
outboardsideoftheseat.
DriverAirbagSpecialFeatures
Driverairbagdeploymentandforceleveliscontrolledby
thedriver’sseatpositionaswellasimpactseverity.Use
ofspecialinflators,resultinaverycompactdriver’sside
airbag.
