• Rearward-facingthe front seat ofchilda vehicleseatsmustwithNEVERa frontbepassengerusedin
airbag. An airbag deployment could cause severe
injuryordeathtoinfantsinthisposition.
Therearedifferentsizesandtypesofrestraintsforchildren
fromnewbornsizetothechildalmostlargeenoughforan
adult safety belt. Always check the child seat owner’s
manualtoensureyouhavethecorrectseatforyourchild.

OlderChildrenandChildRestraints
Childrenwhoweighmorethan20lbs(9kg)andwhoare
older than one year can ride forward-facing in the
vehicle.Forward-facingchildseatsandconvertiblechild
seatsusedintheforward-facingdirectionareforchildren
who weigh 20 to 40 lbs (9 to 18 kg) and who are older
than one year. These child seats are also held in the
vehicle by the lap/shoulder belt or the LATCH child
restraintanchoragesystem.

Safetyexpertsrecommendthatchildrenriderearward-
facinginthevehicleuntiltheyareatleastoneyearold
and weigh at least 20 lbs (9 kg). Two types of child
restraints can be used rearward-facing: infant carriers
and ЉconvertibleЉ child seats. Both types of child re-
straintsareheldinthevehiclebythelap/shoulderbelt
ortheLATCHchildrestraintanchoragesystem.
Theinfantcarrierisonlyusedrearward-facinginthe
vehicle.Itisrecommendedforchildrenwhoweighup
toabout20lbs(9kg).ЉConvertibleЉchildseatscanbe
used either rearward-facing or forward-facing in the
vehicle. Convertible child seats often have a higher
weight limit in the rearward-facing direction than
infantcarriersdo,sotheycanbeusedrearward-facing
bychildrenwhoweighmorethan20lbs(9kg)butare
lessthanoneyearold.
Thebelt-positioningboosterseatisforchildrenweighing
morethan40lbs(18kg),butwhoarestilltoosmalltofit
the vehicle’s seat belts properly. If the child cannot sit
with knees bent over the vehicle’s cushion while the
child’sbackisagainsttheseatback,thenthechildshould
useaBeltPositioningBoosterSeat.Thechildandbooster
seat are held in the vehicle by the lap/shoulder belt.
