mentthevarianceonestep.Repeatasnecessary,untilthe
desiredvarianceisachieved.
Calibrate the compass by driving slowly, under 5 mph
(8 km/h) in one or more complete circles in a area free
fromlargemetallicobjects,untiltheCALindicatorinthe
EVICturnsoff.Thecompasswillnowfunctionnormally.
NOTE: Zone8isthefactorydefault.Duringprogram-
ming,theZoneNumberwillwraparoundfromZone15
to1.PleaserefertotheCompassVarianceZoneMapin
the following section: “Electronic Vehicle Information
Center(EVIC)”
NOTE: Keepallmagneticobjects,suchaslaptopcom-
puters, cell phones and Personal Digital Assistants
(PDAs)(anythingwithabattery)awayfromthecompass
sensor, which is located in the top of the instrument
panel.Thesedevicescaninterferewithcompassaccuracy
andperformance.
AutomaticCompassCalibration
Thecompassonyourvehicleisself-calibrating,eliminat-
ing the need to manually calibrate the compass. When
thevehicleisnew,thecompassmayappearerraticand
the CALindicator message will flash in the EVIC until
thecalibrationiscomplete.
ManualCompassCalibration
If the compass appears erratic or inaccurate, and the
variancehasbeenproperlyset,youmaywishtomanu-
ally recalibrate the compass. To manually calibrate the
compass:
Agoodcalibrationrequiresalevelsurfaceandanenvi-
ronment free from large metallic objects such as build-
ings,bridges,undergroundcables,railroadtracks,etc.
1. Starttheengine,andleavethetransmissionshiftlever
inthePARKposition.
