DRIVE/OVERDRIVE
Use 3rd gear when descending steep grades to prevent
brakesystemdistress.
This range should be used for most city and highway
driving.Itprovidessmoothestupshiftsanddownshifts,
andbestfueleconomy.
LOW—1st
Thisrangeshouldbeusedformaximumenginebraking
when descending steep grades. In this range, up shifts
willoccuronlytopreventengineoverspeedwhiledown
shiftsfrom2ndto1stgearwilloccurasearlyaspossible.
Whenfrequenttransaxleshiftingoccurswhileusingthe
DRIVE/OVERDRIVErange,suchaswhenoperatingthe
vehicleunderheavyloadingconditions(inhillyterrain,
travelingintostrongheadwinds,orwhiletowingtrail-
ers),use3rdgear.
Brake/Transmission Interlock System

Thissystempreventsyoufrommovingtheshiftleverout
of PARK and into any gear unless the brake pedal is
pressed. This system is active only while the ignition
switchisintheONorACCposition.Alwayssteponthe
brake pedal and depress the shift lever knob button
beforeshiftingoutofPARK.
DRIVE—3rd
ThisrangeeliminatesshiftsintoOVERDRIVE.Thetrans-
axle will operate normally in 1st and 2nd while in this
range.
NOTE:
Using 3rd gear while operating the vehicle
under heavy operating conditions will improve perfor-
mance,fueleconomy,andextendtransaxlelifebyreduc-
ingexcessiveshiftingandheatbuildup.
NOTE: Ifamalfunctionoccurs,thesystemwillfunction
normally,exceptyoumaybeabletoshiftthevehiclefrom
