Inspecting your tires
Periodicallyinspectthetiretreadsforunevenorexcessivewearand
removeobjectssuchasstones,nailsorglassthatmaybewedgedinthe
treadgrooves.Checkforholesorcutsthatmaypermitairleakagefrom
thetireandmakenecessaryrepairs.Alsoinspectthetiresidewallsfor
cracking,cuts,bruisesandothersignsofdamageorexcessivewear.If
internaldamagetothetireissuspected,havethetiredemountedand
inspectedincaseitneedstoberepairedorreplaced.Foryoursafety,
tiresthataredamagedorshowsignsofexcessivewearshouldnotbe
usedbecausetheyaremorelikelytoblowoutorfail.
Improperorinadequatevehiclemaintenancecancausetirestowear
abnormally.Inspectallyourtires,includingthespare,frequently,and
replacethemifoneormoreofthefollowingconditionsexist:
Tire wear
Whenthetreadisworndownto
1/16th
ofaninch(2mm),tiresmust
bereplacedtohelppreventyour
vehiclefromskiddingand
hydroplaning.Built-intreadwear
indicators,or“wearbars”,which
looklikenarrowstripsofsmooth
rubberacrossthetreadwillappear
onthetirewhenthetreadisworn
downto1/16thofaninch(2mm).
Whenthetiretreadwearsdownto
thesameheightasthese“wearbars”,thetireiswornoutandmustbe
replaced.
Damage
Periodicallyinspectthetiretreadsandsidewallsfordamage(suchas
bulgesinthetreadorsidewalls,cracksinthetreadgrooveand
separationinthetreadorsidewall).Ifdamageisobservedorsuspected
havethetireinspectedbyatireprofessional.Tirescanbedamaged
duringoff-roaduse,soinspectionafteroff-roaduseisalso
recommended.
