Asfaraspossible,vehiclespeedshouldbecontrolledthrough
correctgearselection.Applicationofthebrakepedalshouldbekept
toanabsoluteminimum.Unlesshilldescentcontrol(HDC)andABS
havebeenfitted,anybrakingonwet,muddyorloosesurfacesis
likelytocauseoneormorewheelstolock-theresultantslidecould
provedangerous.
Hilldescentcontrol(HDC)-iffitted
Duringadescent,ifenginebrakingisinsufficienttocontrolthe
vehiclespeed,HDC(ifselected)automaticallyoperatesthebrakes
toslowthevehicleandmaintainaspeedrelativetotheaccelerator
pedalposition.
Whendrivingoff-road,HDCcanbepermanentlyengaged,toensure
thatcontrolismaintainedwhenever1storreversegearsare
selected.ABSandtractioncontrolarestillfullyoperationalandwill
assistiftheneedarises.
NOTE:WithHDCselected,gearchangescanbecarriedoutinthe
normalway.
Useofengineforbraking
ForvehiclesNOTfittedwithHDC;beforedescendingsteepslopes,
stopthevehicleatleastitslengthbeforethedescent,select1st
gear.
Whiledescendingtheslopeitshouldberememberedthatthe
enginewillprovidesufficientbrakingefforttocontroltherateof
descentandthatthebrakesshouldnotbeapplied.
Accelerating
Usetheacceleratorwithcare-anysuddensurgeofpowermay
inducewheelspinandresultinlossofcontrolofthevehicle.
