ALWAYSfollowthefalllineoftheslope-travellingdiagonallycould
causethevehicletoslidebroadsidedowntheslope.
Ifthesurfaceislooseorslippery,usesufficientspeedinthehighest
practicalgeartotakeadvantageofyourvehicle’smomentum-hill
descentcontrolonlyoperatesin1standreversegears,butABSand
tractioncontrol(wherefitted)willstillbeoperationalwhenrequired.
However,toohighaspeedoverabumpysurfacemayresultina
wheellifting,causingthevehicletolosetractioniftractioncontrolis
notfitted.Inthiscasetryaslowerapproach.
Ifthevehicleisunabletocompleteaclimb,donotattempttoturnit
aroundwhileontheslope.Instead,adoptthefollowingprocedure
toreversedownhilltothefootoftheslope.

Holdthevehiclestationaryusingbothfootandhandbrakes.
Restarttheengineifnecessary.
EngagereversegearandHDC(iffitted).
Releasethehandbrake.Thenreleasethefootbrakeandclutch
simultaneouslyandallowthevehicletoreversedowntheslope.

Unlessitisnecessarytostopthevehicletonegotiate
obstructions,DONOTapplythebrakeorclutchpedalduringthe
descent.
IfHDCisnotfittedorhasnotbeenselectedandthevehicle
beginstoslide,accelerateslightlytoallowthetyrestoregain
grip(onvehicleswithHDCoperating,accelerationis
automaticallycontrolledtoensuretraction).
Whenthevehicleisbackonlevelgroundorwheretractioncanbe
regained,afasterapproachwillprobablyenablethehilltobe
climbed.However,DONOTtakeunnecessaryrisks,ifthehillistoo
difficulttoclimb,findanalternativeroute.
