Theanti-lockbrakingsystem(ABS)preventsthewheelsfrom
locking,therebyhelpingtomaintainsteeringcontrol.Nospecial
drivingtechniquesoreffortisrequiredfromthedriver.

Theanti-lockbraking
systemcannotovercome
thephysicallimitationsof
stoppingthevehicleintoo
shortadistance,cornering
athighspeed,or
Undernormalbraking(wheresufficientroadsurfacefrictionexists
toreliablybringthevehicletoahalt,withoutthewheelslocking),
theanti-lockbrakingsystemwillnotbeactivated.However,ifthe
forceofyourbrakingshouldexceedtheavailableadhesionbetween
thetyresandtheroad,causingoneormorewheelstolock,thenthe
anti-lockbrakingsystemwillautomaticallycomeintooperation.
Thiswillberecognisedbyarapidpulsationfeltthroughthebrake
pedal.

fittedwithanti-lockbraking,

considerationforthe
prevailingroadsurface,
weatherandtraffic
conditions.
Anti-lockbrakinginaction
Inanemergencysituation,fullbrakingeffortshouldALWAYSbe
applied,evenwhentheroadsurfaceisslippery.Theanti-lock
brakingsystemconstantlymonitorsthespeedofeachwheeland
variesbrakingpressuretoeach,accordingtotheamountoftraction
available,therebyensuringthatthewheelsdonotlock.
Alwaysremember,ABSisdesignedtomaintainsteeringcontrol
underheavybrakingconditions.
Onsoftsurfacessuchaspowderysnow,sandorgravel,braking
distancesmaybegreaterthanthoseachievableonavehiclewithout
anti-lockbraking.Thisisbecausetheactionoflockedwheelson
loosesurfaces,istobuildupawedgeofmaterialinfrontofthe
wheels,whichassistsinbringingthevehicletoahalt.However,
eveninthesecircumstances,theanti-lockbrakingsystemwill
providebetterstabilityandsteeringcontrol.
