MAINTAININGYOURVEHICLE
EMISSIONSINSPECTIONANDMAINTENANCE

Insomelocalities,itmaybealegalrequirementtopass
aninspectionofyourvehiclesemissionscontrolsystem.
Failuretopasscouldpreventvehicleregistration.
1. Insertyourignitionkeyintotheignitionswitch.
TurntheignitiontotheONposition,butdonotcrank

orstarttheengine.
3. Ifyoucrankorstarttheengine,youwillhavetostart
thistestover.
For states which have an I/M (Inspection and
Maintenance)requirement,thischeckverifiesthe
following:theMIL(MalfunctionIndicatorLamp)
isfunctioningandisnotonwhentheengineisrunning,
andthattheOBD(OnBoardDiagnostic)systemisready
fortesting.
4. AssoonasyouturnyourkeytotheONposition,you
will see your MILsymbol come on as part of a normal
bulbcheck.

Approximately15secondslater,oneoftwothingswill
happen:
Normally, the OBD system will be ready. The OBD
system may not be ready if your vehicle was recently
serviced,ifyourecentlyhadadeadbattery,orabattery
replacement. If the OBD system should be determined
notreadyfortheI/Mtest,yourvehiclemayfailthetest.
a. TheMILwillflashforabout10secondsandthen
returntobeingfullyilluminateduntilyouturnoff
theignitionkeyorstarttheengine.Thismeansthat
your vehicles OBD system is not ready and you
shouldnotproceedtotheI/Mstation.
Your vehicle has a simple ignition key actuated test
which you can use prior to going to the test station. To
checkifyourvehiclesOBDsystemisready,youmustdo
thefollowing:
