If the engine show s no sign of starting after two 15
second period s of cranking with the accelerator pedal
held to the floor, the “Norm al Starting” proced ure shou ld
be rep eated .

Und er norm al cond itions, do not operate the starter
for longer than 20 second s at one time. At tem pera-
tures below 5°F (Ϫ15°C), you may operate the starter
for up to 25 second s at one time. Longer period s of
operation may resu lt in starter or battery damage. If
the engine does not start at once, rep eat Steps 1
throu gh 4.
AfterStarting
The idle speed is autom atically controlled and will de-
crease as the engine warm s up.

Cold engine speed s higher than necessary for driving 5
or higher than specified for idling may damage engine
components.
1.
Turn the ignition key to the ON/ RUN position.
2.
Watch the “Glow Plug Ind icator Light.” It will stay on
for a maxim um of 2 second s, depend ing on engine
tem peratu re. When the “Glow Plug Ind icator Light” goes
out, the engine is read y to start.
Before turning off you r Diesel engine, alw ays allow
the engine to retu rn to norm al idle speed and then run
for several second s. This assu res prop er lubrication of
the turbocharger. This is particu larly necessary after
period s of high speed driving.
3.
Donot press the accelerator. Turn the ignition key to
START and hold it in this position until the engine starts.
