StandingWater
Do not shift to a lower gear than necessary to maintain
head way. Over-revving the engine can spin the wheels
and traction will be lost.
Avoid driving in stand ing water deeper than 20 inches,
and red uce speed approp riately to minim ize wave ef-
fects. Maxim um speed in 20 inches of water is less than 5
mph (8 km/ h).
Avoid abru pt downshifts on icy or slippery road s, be-
cause engine braking may cause skid ding and loss of
control.
Maintenance
After driving throu gh deep water, insp ect you r vehicle
fluids and lubricants (engine oil, transm ission oil, axle,
transfer case) to assu re the fluids have not been contam i-
nated . Contam inated fluid (milky, foam y in appearance)
shou ld be flushed / changed as soon as possible to pre-
vent component damage.
HillClimbing
NOTE: Before attem pting to climb a hill, determ ine the 5
cond itions at the crest and / or on the other side.
Beforeclimbingasteephill, shift the transm ission to a
lower gear and shift the transfer case to 4L or 4LO. Use
first gear and 4L or 4LO for very steep hills.
DrivingInSnow,MudandSand
In heavy snow, when pulling a load , or for additional
control at slow er speed s, shift the transm ission to a low
gear and shift the transfer case to 4L or 4LO if necessary.
Refer to “Fou r-Wheel Drive Operation” in this section.
Ifyoustallorbegintoloseheadway while climbing a
steep hill, allow you r vehicle to come to a stop and
immediately apply the brakes. Restart the engine and
shift to R (Reverse). Back slow ly down the hill allow ing
the compression braking of the engine to help regu late
