Do not  shift  to  a lower  gear  than  necessary   to maintain
head way.  Over-revving   the  engine  can  spin  the  wheels
and  traction  will  be lost.
Avoid  driving  in  stand ing  water  deeper   than  20 inches,
and  red uce  speed   approp riately   to  minim ize  wave  ef-
fects. Maxim um  speed  in 20 inches of water  is less  than 5
mph  (8 km/  h).
Avoid  abru pt  downshifts   on  icy  or  slippery   road s, be-
cause  engine   braking   may  cause   skid ding  and  loss  of
control.
Maintenance
After  driving   throu gh  deep  water,  insp ect  you r vehicle
fluids  and  lubricants   (engine   oil, transm  ission  oil, axle,
transfer  case) to  assu re the fluids  have  not been  contam i-
nated . Contam inated   fluid (milky,  foam y in appearance)
shou ld  be flushed  / changed  as  soon  as  possible  to  pre-
vent  component   damage.
HillClimbing
NOTE:   Before attem pting  to climb  a hill,  determ ine the 5
cond itions  at the  crest and / or  on the  other  side.
Beforeclimbingasteephill,      shift the  transm ission  to  a
lower  gear  and  shift  the transfer   case to  4L or 4LO.  Use
first  gear and  4L or  4LO for  very  steep  hills.
DrivingInSnow,MudandSand
In  heavy  snow,  when   pulling   a load ,  or for  additional
control  at slow er  speed s, shift  the transm  ission  to a low
gear  and shift  the  transfer  case to  4L or 4LO if necessary.
Refer  to  “Fou r-Wheel  Drive  Operation”   in  this  section.
Ifyoustallorbegintoloseheadway          while  climbing  a
steep   hill,  allow  you r  vehicle   to  come  to   a  stop  and
immediately    apply  the   brakes.  Restart   the  engine   and
shift  to R (Reverse).  Back  slow ly down  the  hill allow ing
the  compression   braking   of the  engine  to  help  regu late
