Thesetemporarymalfunctionscanbecorrectedbyfillingthefueltank
withgoodqualityfuel,properlyclosingthefuelfillinletorlettingthe
electricalsystemdryout.Afterthreedrivingcycleswithouttheseorany
othertemporarymalfunctionspresent,theServiceenginesoon
indicatorshouldstayoffthenexttimetheengineisstarted.Adriving
cycleconsistsofacoldenginestartupfollowedbymixedcity/highway
driving.Noadditionalvehicleserviceisrequired.
IftheServiceenginesoon
indicatorremainson,haveyourvehicle
servicedatthefirstavailableopportunity.Althoughsomemalfunctions
detectedbytheOBD-IImaynothavesymptomsthatareapparent,
continueddrivingwiththeServiceenginesoon
indicatoroncan
resultinincreasedemissions,lowerfueleconomy,reducedengineand
transmissionsmoothness,andleadtomorecostlyrepairs.
Readiness for Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing
Somestate/provincialandlocalgovernmentsmayhave
Inspection/Maintenance(I/M)programstoinspecttheemissioncontrol
equipmentonyourvehicle.Failuretopassthisinspectioncouldprevent
youfromgettingavehicleregistration.YourvehiclemaynotpasstheI/M
testiftheServiceenginesoon
indicatorisonornotworking
properly(bulbisburnedout),oriftheOBD-IIsystemhasdetermined
thatsomeoftheemissioncontrolsystemshavenotbeenproperly
checked.Inthiscase,thevehicleisconsiderednotreadyforI/Mtesting.
IftheServiceenginesoon
indicatorisonorthebulbdoesnot
work,thevehiclemayneedtobeserviced.RefertotheOnboard
diagnostics(OBD-II)descriptioninthischapter.
Ifthevehicle’sengineortransmissionhasjustbeenserviced,orthe
batteryhasrecentlyrundownorbeenreplaced,theOBD-IIsystemmay
indicatethatthevehicleisnotreadyforI/Mtesting.Todetermineifthe
vehicleisreadyforI/Mtesting,turntheignitionkeytotheonposition
for15secondswithoutcrankingtheengine.IftheServiceengine
soon
indicatorblinkseighttimes,itmeansthatthevehicleisnot
readyforI/Mtesting;iftheServiceenginesoon
indicatorstayson
solid,itmeansthatthevehicleisreadyforI/Mtesting.
TheOBD-IIsystemisdesignedtochecktheemissioncontrolsystem
duringnormaldriving.Acompletecheckmaytakeseveraldays.Ifthe
vehicleisnotreadyforI/Mtesting,thefollowingdrivingcycleconsisting
ofmixedcityandhighwaydrivingmaybeperformed:

minutesofstop-and-godrivingwithatleastfour30-secondidle
periods.
