HowdoesthePersonalSafetySystemாwork?
ThePersonalSafetySystem௡canadaptthedeploymentstrategyofyour
vehicle’ssafetydevicesaccordingtocrashseverityandoccupant
conditions.Acollectionofcrashandoccupantsensorsprovides
informationtotheRestraintscontrolmodule(RCM).Duringacrash,the
RCMmayactivatetheseatbeltpretensionersand/oreitheroneorboth
stagesofthedual-stageairbagsupplementalrestraintsbasedoncrash
severityandoccupantconditions.
Thefactthatthepretensionersorairbagsdidnotactivateforbothfront
seatoccupantsinacollisiondoesnotmeanthatsomethingiswrongwith
thesystem.Rather,itmeansthePersonalSafetySystem௡determined
theaccidentconditions(crashseverity,beltusage,etc.)werenot
appropriatetoactivatethesesafetydevices.Frontairbagsand
pretensionersaredesignedtoactivateonlyinfrontalandnear-frontal
collisions,notrollovers,side-impacts,orrear-impactsunlessthecollision
causessufficientlongitudinaldeceleration.
Driverandpassengerdual-stageairbagsupplementalrestraints
Thedual-stageairbagsinflationenergyistailoredtocrashseverity,belt
use,driverseatposition,andotherfactors.Alower,lessforcefulenergy
levelisprovidedformorecommon,moderate-severityimpacts.Ahigher
energylevelisusedforthemostsevereimpactsunlessthedriver’sseat
isforwardforasmalloccupant.RefertoAirbagsupplemental
restraintssectioninthischapter.

Thefrontcrashseveritysensorenhancestheabilitytodetectthe
severityofanimpact.Positionedupfront,itprovidesvaluable
informationearlyinthecrasheventontheseverityoftheimpact.This
allowsyourPersonalSafetySystem௡todistinguishbetweendifferent
levelsofcrashseverityandmodifythedeploymentstrategyofthe
dual-stageairbagsandseatbeltpretensioners.
